Some of the big cities in Central Texas will receive an across-the-board increase in all sales tax allocations from the Texas comptroller’s office.
Cities, including Austin, Buda and San Marcos, will receive a double-digit percentage increase. This increase is the first time in a year and half that all cities received an increase. The money from sales in March was distributed to cities this week.
Sale tax makes up about 20 percent of a city’s budget, but funds have recently fallen because of the recession. This month the comptroller handed out $567 million in sales tax which is up 4.7 percent from a year ago.
