The defense attorney for 77-year-old Paul Konigsberg, long-time accounting executive and former senior tax partner at Konigsberg Wolf & Co. in New York and the man accused of aiding and abetting former stockbroker, investment advisor, and financier Bernard Lawrence “Bernie” Madoff in massive fraudulent activities, recently asked for a speedy trial in New York.
In the request, made on Tuesday, December 3, Konigsberg’s attorney stated that the defense team is afraid that witnesses’ aging minds may have an effect on their testimonies and that their memories of the events relevant to the case may fade.
Judge Laura Taylor Swain did not agree with him, saying she’ll consider setting a trial date for Konigsberg in January.
Konigsberg made a not guilty plea to falsification of documents that aided fraud, which robbed countless investors of nearly $20 billion.
