Grammy-award singer-songwriter and rapper Lauryn Hill began serving her three-month prison sentence at a minimum security prison with dorm-style living arrangements for failing to pay over $1 million in taxes over the past decade on July 8, the Associated Press reported. During jail term, Hill is expected to be working maintenance, landscaping, and food service jobs.
During her trial, Hill ascribed her failure to pay taxes for $1.8 million in earnings from 2005-2007 and $.5 million in state and federal taxes in 2008-2009 due to not being in music industry and needing to protect herself and her children, which assistant U.S. Attorney Sandra Moser called “a parade of excuses centering around her feeling put-upon.” Moser did commend Hill’s artistic abilities and her charity work geared towards helping impoverished children around the world, however.
