Extensions on Filing Your Tax Return
Filing the correct tax return form(s) in full and on time allows the IRS to prepare your tax return without hassle. The annual deadline to file a Federal individual income tax return is April 15, but if you cannot file your income tax return in time, you may request an automatic six-month extension on or before the initial filing deadline.
Filing For Extensions
There are three ways you can obtain an automatic extension to file your tax return. These include:
- Electronically fill out the Application For Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Return form (Form 4868)
- Pay all of your estimated income tax due using either a credit or debit card, or the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
- Mail Form 4868 to the address provided on the form
Before you request an extension of time to file your tax return, you must first pay your estimated tax balance. This request for extension is a request for time to file your extension for a tax return, not an extension of tax payment.
